The Food and Water Security Committee at the Shura Council held a series of consultations and discussions on Monday morning regarding the contents of a letter submitted by artisanal fishermen to the Council. The letter addresses a decision to convert artisanal fishing vessels from individual ownership to registration under a commercial registry.
The discussions fall within the core mandate and legislative and oversight responsibilities of the Committee, reflecting its commitment to examining issues related to food security and the sustainability of national resources.
During its third regular meeting, Committee members presented a range of views and observations concerning the subject of the letter. The regulatory, economic and social dimensions of the decision were reviewed, along with its potential impact on artisanal fishermen. Members also discussed the role of the measure in organizing and strengthening the sector’s sustainability, while emphasizing the importance of striking a balance between regulatory requirements and the interests of those engaged in this vital activity.
The Committee members reviewed the executive status of a previously Wishes on “Agricultural Cities: Opportunities and Challenges,” and noted that responses from the relevant entities invited to attend are still pending.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Abdullah Al Malek Ahmed Al Shahi, head of the Committee at the Council, and attended by Committee members.
