This Monday morning, the Health and Social Committee of the Shura Council hosted representatives from the Ministry of Health's National Organ Transplant Program to hear their feedback and insights regarding the draft law regulating the transplantation of human organs and tissues, as referred by the government.
During the meeting, experts provided a visual presentation reviewing the history of organ transplantation in Oman and worldwide. They emphasized the significance of organ transplantation in treating various diseases, especially the recent increase in kidney and liver failures, which reduces financial burdens on patients and saves time and effort for medical staff. Additionally, the importance of establishing a national organ bank was discussed to combat the black market for organ transplantation globally, aiming to reduce cases of fraud targeting Omani citizens abroad.

Furthermore, the meeting reviewed the conditions for organ donation by living and deceased donors, in addition to national campaigns and programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of organ donation. Legal and religious frameworks for organ donation were also examined.

The meeting also discussed all the articles of the draft law regulating the transplantation of human organs and tissues, which the committee is currently studying. Experts from the National Organ Transplant Program provided their feedback on the draft law's articles.

This took place during the thirteenth regular meeting of the committee, within the first annual session of the tenth term (2023-2027), chaired by Mansour bin Zaher Al Hajri, with the honorable members of the committee in attendance.
