28 سبتمبر 2025

Shura council held its 12th joint meeting with the European Parliament in Brussels, as part of the council’s official visit to the Kingdom of Belgium during the period 24–25 September 2025. The meeting was headed by Taher al-Junaibi, Deputy Chairman of  Shura council, in response to the invitation of Dr. Reinhold Lopatka, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the Arabian Peninsula in the European Parliament.
The meeting was attended by Ahmed al-Nadabi, Secretary General of the Council, and Hussein al-Lawati, Member of the Council, alongside Ro’a al-Zadjali, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Kingdom of Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Union.
Discussions addressed a number of issues of mutual interest between Oman and the European Parliament, including strengthening political and strategic partnership between the EU and the GCC states, developing cooperation in economic and trade fields, renewable energy, digitalization, and supply chains, as well as supporting free trade agreements and expanded investment partnerships. Regional security, conflict resolution, and recent international developments were also discussed, with emphasis on Oman’s role as a mediator in various regional conflict-resolution efforts.
The meeting further examined the importance of strengthening the Gulf-European parliamentary dialogue, as well as enhancing cooperation in trade—particularly in renewable energy and green hydrogen—and in human rights. Both sides emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing cooperation within the legislative field.
In his remarks, Deputy Chairman Taher al-Junaibi highlighted the distinguished relations between Oman and the European Union, praising the initiatives of the European Parliament in addressing current regional issues, and underlining the importance of the parliamentary partnership between Shura council and the European Parliament, enriched through joint meetings and reciprocal visits that have accelerated cooperation.
For his part, Dr. Reinhold Lopatka praised the strong ties between Oman and the European Parliament and expressed his aspiration to deepen this cooperation through greater exchange of expertise and coordination on regional and international issues.
At the conclusion, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing parliamentary cooperation and strengthening relations between Oman and the European Union in ways that serve common interests and support legislative, economic, and developmental collaboration. They also emphasized the role of parliaments in promoting international understanding and

contributing to peace and stability through sustained dialogue and effective partnerships that reflect the aspirations of peoples for a safer, more prosperous future.
As part of the visit, the delegation also met with Peter De Roover, President of the Belgian House of Representatives. Discussions focused on economic and trade relations between Oman and Belgium, as well as investment opportunities in renewable energy and logistics—particularly in the Duqm Economic Zone—highlighting Oman’s stability as a key factor in attracting investment.
The delegation also met with Kristel Schaldemose, Vice-President of the European Parliament, where both sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of shared interest, underscoring the role of parliamentary diplomacy in enhancing mutual coordination, and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral parliamentary relations through exchanges of visits and expertise.
It is noteworthy that the European Parliament is the only directly elected legislative institution of the EU, serving as a cornerstone in European decision-making and functioning as its oversight and consultative body. Shura council maintains close ties with the European Parliament through joint cooperation, visits, and exchanges, which have enhanced diplomatic, economic, and parliamentary relations between Oman and the EU.
