At the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva Shura Council Chairman Stresses Importance of Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism in Advancing Peace, Justice, and Sustainable Development

31 يوليو 2025

The Shura Council, headed by Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, participated in the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland, from 29 to 31 July 2025. The event was held under the theme: “Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All.”
In his address to the assembly, the Council Chairman emphasized that the world is currently witnessing a critical period marked by the escalation of armed conflicts, a growing number of refugees and displaced persons, as well as crises linked to food, energy, and climate change. These global challenges, he noted, necessitate enhanced parliamentary cooperation and collective efforts to foster peace and achieve sustainable development.
He underlined that parliamentary collaboration is no longer a matter of procedural engagement but a strategic imperative to build unified global positions that reinforce the values of peace, coexistence, human dignity, and the protection of fundamental rights—while promoting equity and justice among nations.
Al Maawali further noted that the Sultanate of Oman has historically served as a cultural and diplomatic bridge among nations and civilizations, grounded in its longstanding approach of dialogue, openness, and the building of constructive ties. He emphasized that parliamentary platforms must continue to serve as effective arenas for fostering mutual understanding—even in the face of differing perspectives and geopolitical complexities.
On the Palestinian issue, the Chairman reiterated that the Palestinian people are entitled to legitimate rights as enshrined in international law and UN conventions, foremost among them the right to establish an independent state on their national territory. He expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, denouncing the systematic starvation and the collapse of essential services as blatant violations of international law. He called on parliaments worldwide to take firm and clear stances to stop these violations, ensure the urgent and safe delivery of humanitarian aid, and work towards a lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
He also stressed the pivotal role of parliaments in upholding humanitarian values, promoting international cooperation, and strengthening multilateralism. He called for unified parliamentary action to advance human rights and achieve equitable and sustainable development that meets the aspirations of peoples for peace and stability.
In closing, he expressed hope that the conference would yield unified parliamentary visions capable of restoring balance to the international system, advancing global peace efforts, and supporting a collaborative order founded on mutual respect and shared interests.

The conference witnessed broad participation from parliamentary speakers and members from around the world, who discussed priority global issues including climate change, food security, and sustainable development. Deliberations also focused on enhancing international parliamentary cooperation in building a more secure and prosperous future.
As part of the Council’s delegation, Tariq Mohammed Al Kharousi and Mohammed Amer Al Mashaykhi took part in a roundtable titled “Innovation for the Future,” which addressed contemporary challenges such as armed conflict and the climate crisis. The session also examined the role of parliaments in promoting security through trust-building and inclusive governance. Discussions concluded by affirming the importance of international cooperation and the responsible use of technology to support global peace.
Additionally, Mohammed Amer Al Mashaykhi participated in a discussion session on “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” where he highlighted Oman’s national efforts in this area. Participants emphasized the legislative role of parliaments in supporting sustainable development through laws that promote food security, healthcare, and green energy.
On the sidelines of the conference, Khalid Al Maawali met with several parliamentary leaders from across the Arab region and beyond. The meetings addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Oman and their respective countries, in addition to reviewing current developments, particularly the situation in Gaza.
