The Health and Social Affairs Committee of the Shura Council commended the royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, highlighting significant achievements in the healthcare sector. These include the launch of the National Human Genome Program, the establishment of a National Eye Surgery and Treatment Center, the Early Cancer Screening Program, and the expansion of nuclear medicine services with the development of a radiopharmaceutical production facility.
As part of its efforts to review the proposed Disability Rights draft law referred by the government, the committee hosted representatives from the Omani Association for Persons with Disabilities and the Omani Association for the Hearing Impaired.
Discussions centered on feedback and insights regarding the draft law, which comprises seven chapters and 22 articles. The dialogue aimed to shape a comprehensive legislative framework that effectively safeguards the rights of persons with disabilities in Oman. Key topics included the classification of disabilities, rehabilitation processes, the role of specialized centers, and the legal and psychological aspects associated with disabilities.
The committee also explored specific provisions addressing the needs of individuals with hearing impairments, incorporating the perspectives of representatives from the Omani Association for the Hearing Impaired.
The proposed law underscores Oman’s commitment to upholding human rights principles and fostering inclusive development that encompasses all segments of society, ensuring equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
