The Legislative and Legal Committee of the Shura Council commenced discussions this morning (Tuesday) on the petition submitted to the Council concerning the implications and challenges associated with transforming full-service law firms into firms specialised in a single area of legal practice. As part of its deliberations, the Committee hosted representatives of the Oman Lawyers Association.
During the meeting, the Committee heard the Association’s views regarding the rationale behind the proposal and reviewed the anticipated outcomes of its implementation, as well as its potential implications for law firms in the Sultanate of Oman. A number of challenges and practical applications arising from professional practice were also presented and discussed.
The Committee and the Association exchanged views on various aspects of the proposal, including the extent to which addressing the issue could contribute to enhancing the efficiency of legal services and improving the professional performance of law firms in a manner that keeps pace with their role in supporting comprehensive development. The discussions also addressed ways of strengthening the quality of services provided to clients and enhancing the investment environment.
Participants further exchanged views on the potential challenges and implications associated with implementing such an approach. This comes as part of the Committee’s efforts to complete its study of the petition and benefit from the views of relevant stakeholders in order to formulate balanced recommendations that serve the public interest.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Ali Al Saadi, Chairman of the Legislative and Legal Committee of the Shura Council, in the presence of Their Excellencies members of the Committee.
