The Services and Public Utilities Committee hosts "Be’ah" to discuss waste management in Oman's governorates

The Shura Council's Services and Public Utilities Committee convened this morning (Monday) to engage in a discourse with a number of stakeholders from the Omani Holding Company for Environmental Services (Bee'ah) regarding the observations that the Committee had received pertaining to the status of waste management in the Sultanate of Oman's governorates.
During the meeting, the specialists presented a visual presentation on the structure and objectives of the waste management sector in Oman, Bee'ah's future plans to develop the sector, the technical and engineering specifications of the company's landfills, the challenges related to the collection of waste, and the company's strategy to recycle green waste. The company's strategy to curb the export of solid waste outside the country, its plans to recycle green waste, and a review of waste management experiences in developed countries and the technologies used in waste management in them were also discussed.
 
In turn, a number of Their Excellences members of the committee submitted a number of inquiries that mainly centered on waste recycling, environmental pollution, in addition to delays in sweeping containers and contracts. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to establish a coordination framework between the waste treatment sector and the public hygiene sector in the governorates. Furthermore, the committee discussed the potential benefits of utilizing the recycling sector to enhance the state budget, generate energy, and create job opportunities for citizens. They also emphasized the importance of establishing legislative foundations that regulate the mechanism of exporting waste of all kinds outside Oman. Additionally, they highlighted the necessity of developing solutions to the accumulation of waste in tourist areas and residential areas. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of expanding the size of garbage containers.
 
In addition, the committee approved its final report on the desire to study the reality of housing cities in the Sultanate of Oman.
