Shura Digital Economy Study Team Meets with Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology Officials

The Shura Digital Economy Study Team met today with H.E. Dr. Ali Amer Al-Shezawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, along with a number of ministry specialists. The meeting aimed to discuss the outcomes of the National Digital Economy Program and explore institutional integration to enhance the digital economy’s contribution to the national GDP.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Abdullah Zahir Al-Hinai, Head of the Study Team, emphasized that the session is part of the team’s ongoing efforts to support Oman’s strategic direction toward strengthening the digital economy in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. He highlighted the importance of identifying challenges facing the digital economy sector and putting forward recommendations to support digital industries and stimulate growth.
During the meeting, ministry gave a presentation on the National Digital Economy Program and its objectives. Launched in 2021, the program aims to build a thriving digital economy and provide a secure and advanced infrastructure that supports digital government operations. It is aligned with Oman’s socio-economic development goals and is designed to meet future needs and sustainability objectives in accordance with Oman Vision 2040.
The presentation also covered the program’s key executive tracks, which include: digital government transformation, cybersecurity industry development, artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies, space sector development, digital industry and fintech, e-commerce, and the advancement of digital infrastructure.
The meeting addressed several core topics, including the national plans in place to bolster Oman’s digital economy, the need for an enabling digital environment and infrastructure, and the enhancement of legal and regulatory frameworks. Discussions also focused on digital investment attraction policies, support for startups, and key performance indicators for measuring the digital economy.
Additionally, the challenges related to data collection and analysis reviewed, as well as the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving digital transformation. Efforts to build digital skills and capabilities were also highlighted.
