Shura Council Bureau Reviews Ministerial Responses and Oversight Tools and Examines a Number of Standing Committee Reports and Citizens’ Communications

The Bureau of the Shura Council reviewed, during its meeting held today (Wednesday), the agenda of the Council’s upcoming regular sessions scheduled to be convened in February, in addition to reviewing the agenda of the joint session with the State Council, which will discuss articles subject to divergence in a number of draft laws referred by the Government. This comes within the framework of the two Councils’ efforts to enhance and improve the legislative framework in a manner that supports sustainable development across various sectors.
This took place during the eighth ordinary meeting of the Bureau for the third ordinary session of the tenth term (2023–2027), chaired by the Chairman of the Council, and attended by the Members of the Bureau.
During the meeting, the Bureau reviewed a number of ministerial responses to oversight tools submitted by Members of the Council. These included a response from the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology to a briefing request regarding the construction of tunnels linking the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, in which the Ministry affirmed its continued efforts to develop infrastructure and proceed with the implementation of road projects.
The Bureau also reviewed the response of the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning to a briefing request concerning planning aspects related to the location of one of the projects. In addition, the Bureau examined the response of the Minister of Health to a briefing request regarding preventive measures to limit the spread of seasonal viruses.
Furthermore, the Bureau reviewed the response of the Minister of Education to the report of the Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Committee concerning the employment of graduates in the field of Information Technology. The response of the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion to a briefing request regarding procedures undertaken to examine the dominance of certain companies in the delivery sector was also reviewed.
The Bureau also examined the response of the Minister of Labour to a question regarding the Omanization of the position of institute director in private training institutions, which included the ministerial decisions issued in this regard. In addition, the Bureau reviewed the response concerning the implementation of the unified academic salary scale, noting that the Ministry is currently studying and reviewing the matter.
The Bureau further examined the response of the Minister of Information to a briefing request concerning the absence of effective legal frameworks regulating social media platforms. The response indicated that the matter requires legislative intervention, and that the Ministry is
coordinating with the relevant authorities to establish an appropriate legal framework to regulate content on social media platforms.
On another note, the Bureau reviewed a request submitted by a number of citizens concerning employment contracts of Omani employees that affect their job stability. The request called for reviewing the matter and taking appropriate measures to safeguard the rights of Omani citizens and enhance job security.
