Cairo, Egypt - April 27, 2024 - Oman's Shura Council made a strong showing at the 6th Arab Parliament Conference, focusing on both the promise and perils of artificial intelligence (AI). The conference, held under the banner "A Parliamentary Vision for Safe Deployment of Artificial Intelligence," brought together leaders from across the Arab world to discuss this transformative technology.
Oman Calls for Regulations

Leading the Omani delegation, Speaker Khalid bin Hilal Al Ma'awali stressed the importance of building a regulatory framework to ensure AI is used safely and ethically in Arab countries. He emphasized the need for AI development to align with Arab values and culture. The Shura Council praised the Arab Parliament's initiative to create a "Parliamentary Vision for Safe Deployment of Artificial Intelligence," which could guide responsible AI governance in the region.



AI's Economic Boost Highlighted

Discussions also explored the economic potential of AI. Al Ma'awali cited studies suggesting AI could increase global GDP by 14% by 2030. He highlighted AI's ability to drive productivity, innovation, and revenue across various sectors. Additionally, Al Ma'awali acknowledged the potential for new jobs created by AI, but stressed the need for a workforce equipped with the necessary skills.

Addressing Challenges of AI

While acknowledging the benefits, Al Ma'awali did not shy away from discussing potential challenges. He emphasized the need to proactively address concerns about job displacement and ethical dilemmas associated with AI. The conference explored the need for measures like skills development programs and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible AI implementation.

International Cooperation on AI Regulation

Recognizing the global nature of AI, Al Ma'awali called for international cooperation to establish a binding agreement on AI regulation. This agreement would ensure consistent and responsible practices regarding AI development and use worldwide.



Solidarity with Palestine Voiced

Beyond AI, Al Ma'awali's speech offered a powerful message of solidarity with Palestine. He condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression and its devastating impact on Palestinian lives. Al Ma'awali urged Arab nations to take a unified stance in support of Palestine and called for immediate action to end the Israeli occupation and achieve peace.

The Omani delegation, including representatives from both the Shura Council and Council of State, actively participated in the conference. Their presence highlighted Oman's commitment to regional cooperation and its proactive approach to navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
