The General Secretariat of the Shura Council celebrated the “Purple Saturday” initiative as part of its ongoing support for national efforts to promote awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities and reinforce the principles of inclusion and community participation. The initiative aligns with the national campaign launched by the Ministry of Social Development.

The event featured a distinguished group of persons with disabilities who shared their personal experiences, the challenges they have overcome, and the achievements they have accomplished. Participants also showcased their talents and creative works across a variety of fields, highlighting their capabilities and meaningful contributions to society.

As part of the programme, the General Secretariat presented a working paper entitled “The Shura Council’s Efforts to Support and Empower Persons with Disabilities,” delivered by one of the Council’s specialists. The presentation outlined the Council’s legislative and oversight role in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities through the review of draft laws and relevant legislation, as well as the submission of studies and recommendations aimed at strengthening their rights and enabling their active participation in various sectors.

The celebration also included a panel discussion covering several key themes, including introductions to the participants, the challenges they have faced, the achievements they are most proud of, their perspectives on enhancing support services for persons with disabilities, and their messages to the wider community.

In addition, participants displayed a range of artistic and creative talents in painting, poetry, photography, handicrafts, music, and other fields. The showcase reflected the Shura Council’s commitment to supporting initiatives that highlight the abilities of persons with disabilities while providing platforms that enhance their visibility and celebrate their creativity and potential.

The “Purple Saturday” initiative, led by the Ministry of Social Development, aims to promote the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities, foster a culture of inclusivity across society, and encourage public and private sector institutions to provide more accessible and disability-friendly services and facilities.

The Shura Council remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance the empowerment of persons with disabilities as part of its legislative responsibilities and its efforts to strengthen the legal framework governing disability rights. These efforts contribute to expanding opportunities for their participation in public life and support the objectives of sustainable development in the Sultanate of Oman.
